Ashamed as I am to admit it I'm quite a fan of retro food - one of my favourite starter choices is prawn cocktail, so when I spotted a cherry cheesecake recipe in the 'retro rapido' section of my Nigella Express cookbook I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately though Nigella was quite adamant that you shouldn't use cherry pie filling - this was quite a surprise given some of the other ingredients she's not ashamed to use - and as I couldn't find the alternative she suggested, a pure fruit conserve - the shops had every other flavour but cherry - I decided to scrap that idea and use my gran's recipe instead.
This is a recipe that I've had stuck in my recipe book for a while but have never quite got round to making, so what better time than to make it for the first time when you have guests for lunch?! Fortunately it was all quite simple, even though it had to be baked in the oven a couple of times and after the second time I had to give my Mum a quick call to see how set it was supposed to be at this stage as it seemed quite wobbly. One advantage of family recipes is that you can do this! It clearly tasted ok too as six of us managed to pretty much demolish a pud that I have been since told should serve about 10 people in one sitting!
